Hitherfield School

Our school is a happy place for children to learn and grow, and we warmly invite you to visit us! We believe that when children are happy, engaged, and challenged, that optimum learning will take place.

At Hitherfield every child is unique, and comes to us with his or her own strengths and interests. By individualizing our program in Math and Language particularly, we nurture growth, success and confidence in our students. Developing confidence, decision-making and respect are key components of our Mission Statement and daily life at the school. Our academic programs are rigorous and include Math, Language, Science, Social Science, French, Visual Arts, Music and Physical Education, and students from Grades 6 to Grade 8 sit exams in all subject areas three times each year. We are unique in many ways and you should visit us to experience the warm inviting atmosphere that so many prospective parents comment upon.

When you pull into the driveway you will not fail to be impressed by the beautiful location of the school sitting high on the hill; by the pond where all children delight in learning about natural environments, catching and studying frogs and tadpoles, reading and sketching; by our open fields which offer ample space for play, orienteering, cross-country skiing and running.

“Imagine a place where your child is always greeted warmly and made to feel welcome with a parent-communication experience that keeps you informed and confident that your child has fallen in love with learning.”

A Little About Our Programs

Every child is unique and brings his/her own strengths, needs, abilities, and interests to school. Our teachers excel in their commitment to view every child as an individual and to discover those strategies that will enable every child to reach potential. Much of our work at Hitherfield is individualized. We have many children working ahead of level; some may be a little below level on entry, but with support and individual attention, they thrive and make exciting gains.

Our students, from Grades 6-8, sit exams three times each year; all students from Grade 1 and beyond have a math test every Friday; spelling tests and end of unit tests, in all subject areas, are ongoing.

Physical education is an important aspect of life at Hitherfield. We use our 82 acres for cross-country running and skiing; students play football, soccer, and baseball. In addition, during our Fall and Spring terms, students from JK-3 go swimming once a week at Making Waves in Milton, while our Upper School students go Rock Climbing at Aspire.

During the winter term, every child JK above participates in cross-country skiing. Our oversized gymnasium has volleyball and basketball courts. It also houses a fully equipped stage. Each term students may wish to participate in Intermurals with students from other small private schools in the region through our SSAF partnership.

Our “May Plays” have become a major aspect of every child’s passage through the school. All children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 perform in our plays, and love being a part of them! Self-confidence and cooperation are two of the most important benefits of our dramatic arts productions.

We believe in paving the path for success in high school by steady, consistent, and rewarding academic and personal gains in elementary school. Our students learn to manage time, study, complete homework assignments, and present themselves, effectively, and with confidence. In our safe, nurturing environment, they grow in respect, integrity, and citizenship.

Preschool Program (JK & SK)

Our preschool program provides a great grounding for young minds. Children learn about the world around them through indoor and outdoor play, music, art, reading and the introduction of basic math principles. We are proud to say that all preschool children graduate to grade one with strong reading skills and a curiosity for learning.
Full-time preschool runs Monday-Friday 8:30am – 3:30pm. Before and after school care available.

Grades 1-3

Our primary grades focus on the fundamentals – reading, math and personal development. We recognize that all children come to Hitherfield with their unique strength and challenges and it is our job to assist students in achieving their personal best. Individual learning programs are the norm to help children gain confidence and keep them striving for more.

Grades 4-6

Our upper elementary and middle school programs help to hone the student’s skills in personal study, decision-making, language, arts and examination. Students sit weekly math tests, get involved in group work and science and computer lab time.

Grades 7-8

The senior students are preparing for high school. Independent studies, educational trips and exam preparations are all part of this program. Many of our grade 8 students have been accepted at prestigious independent high schools.

Our programs exceeds the minimum requirements set by the Ministry of Education.

Hear it from our parents!

Our son has been fortunate to be in the care of this amazing school since he was 4 years old. We believe that the teachers and staff at Hitherfield truly know our son. He is provided with academic opportunities in all areas. We appreciate the time they spend tailoring the curriculum to address his interests, strengths and needs. Small classes have provided our son with ample teacher time; he is able to ask questions and participate in discussions. He says he truly feels important to the teachers and that they want him to share his ideas. His teachers lead their classes by example as they promote kindness, inclusion and generosity. The May Plays each year are an absolute highlight as they allow all students to showcase their talents, develop confidence and try something new. There is nothing sweeter than to see one of the older students leading the young ones in song and dance. Our son says “I love it at Hitherfield!” We echo this statement and feel that the education, happiness and well-being of the students at Hitherfield are truly the driving force of the wonderful school.

HITHERFIELD SCHOOL PARENTS

From the very first moment of our initial visit to Hitherfield, it has felt a lot like home to our son, TJ. The teachers and staff show a sincere and constant effort to help each child develop a strong sense of self, and of citizenship in a supportive and inclusive school community. Academically, our son began to progress immediately and his whole outlook on learning changed for the better. The school’s creed is to ” develop confident and independent learners, eager to achieve their personal best in a rapidly changing world.” This goal is achieved not only in academics, but in school trips, the annual school production, a growing sports, and physical activity program and many social and charity events at the school and throughout the community. It seems cliche to say that Hitherfield is like a big family. They have created a family-oriented, yet extremely professional, educational environment. Hitherfield has become a home away from home for our son, where there are expectations to be met, contributions to be made and loving support of the results. For that, we are truly grateful.
